The Yanagi, or willow tree is symbolic of spring, resilience, and purity. The Buddhist diety, Kannon (or thousand armed Kannon) uses a willow brance to sprinkle the nectar of life. This design reflects the feature of the willow in its broad impressive trunk, and the seemingly frail but durable branches sheltering the ground demonstrating inner strength and outer elegance. Little wonder the willow also represents the female gender in Japanese culture.
