Antique Go Board

Go is an ancient Japanese game and today is played by millions worldwide in clubs and events. There are also various ceremonies associated with the game or its element parts. The rules are simple so even children of young ages can play, yet the possible combinations are mindboggling. Go boards and pieces are available in many levels of quality from portable pocket versions to the tournament expert levels with massive thick boards and pieces made from the finest materials. This board is 41 cm square by 8 cm thick and has four carved removable legs. It has a dark patina and the condition is really only fair with various cracking, dings, dents, scratches and checking throughout, but the lines are intact and visible so this is still a very playable set. I have heard of restorations of these boards but I’m not familiar with either the procedures or what services might be available. The three bowls also have seen some years with cracks and checking, and some gluing. The pieces are the best part of the group. The white pieces are polished clam, probably from the Hyuga region famous for producing high quality clamshell specifically for Go. The black pieces are natural black slate and I think these come from the Kanagawa region. In any event, they are very attractive pieces and feel nice in the hand. There are a few with minor chips, but overall they’re in nice shape and condition. These types of pieces get very pricey on some Go supplies sites because the regions in Japan producing them have either stopped or are very limited in production. Oddly enough, this set was found stored in a barn in Montana. The board is heavy, so overseas shipping is something to consider when purchasing.
