Custom Kamon Menuki
The Kamon is a heraldic symbol found throughout Japanese art, textiles, and architecture. It is the identifying symbol for particular families in Japan similar to the heraldic shields of European clans, however Japanese Kamon were often used as a badge of award for deeds or acceptance into a particular family. They were often bestowed to a lower rank as an honorific award from a Lord to recognize particularly outstanding acts or actions. They were also used as a means for control and unification of families and groups to facilitate extension of rule or control. Having one’s Lord grant the use of their Kamon was a great honor and to an artisan such as a swordsmith, would bring greater recognition and demand for their works. Families could retain more than one Kamon and would wear particular designs for particular functions. There are even generic designs for use by families who retain no given kamon for formal functions to maintain the proper dress code.

Legacy arts can now replicate kamon of many types and sizes. These can be made for menuki from single mon, to several linked together. These mon are rendered in silver or gold. They can also be used for application to fittings of custom make, and even wearable items such as cufflinks or tie-clasps.

For availability and price, please contact Legacy Arts by the email link below. Designs are somewhat limited based on detail complexity and design, but generally most any design can be rendered. Clear scans of finished final work, or Jpeg images are needed for processing. A scan or image from one of the many available printed sources of Kamons will work very well also, and this is recommended to process the order more expeditiously.
Pricing varies and a quote will be supplied after design and dimensions have been finalized.
