Odawara Rim Tsuba

This tsuba with a copper plate and silver fukurin, is made in the style of Hirata Hikozo. This particular type of fukurin (separately installed rim) is called “Odawara fukurin” and is a loosely installed rim with raised rivet like nodules and punch marks. This type of rim was one of Hirata Hikozos noted specialties and can be seen in numerous examples of his work in the Higo Kinko Taikan. The copper plate also has elements in his style with large punch marks in seppadai adjacent to the nakagoana, and the amida yasuri file marks radiating from the center. The patina is a choppy warm brown and chocolate. It has a rough hewn elegance like Hikozo did, but alas, I do believe this is a contemporary copy since it does not have the refinement of Hikozo works, or the look of a 300 year old tsuba. My impression is that this tsuba was made within the last 50 years or so. However it is a nice large tsuba made in the spirit of Hikozo and would look very nice on a koshirae so it is being offered on that basis, and for less than what one would pay to have one made today of the same skill. Includes box and pillow.
