Gold Chicken Menuki
Price: $450.00 Sale: $375.

Excellent menuki of a rooster, hen, and chicks in thin gold sheet. Solid gold was a less common material for fittings and was typically reserved for those with the rank and means to support its use. Gold sheet was an alternative used to provide the look with more economy. Because of its delicate nature, menuki of this type were backed with filler such as pitch to prevent them from being crushed when wrapped or handled. These are nicely sculpted and detailed with even their posts intact on the back which is unusual for menuki of this type. There is beautiful “kinsabe” or “gold rust on them. Kinsabe is an orange to reddish patina that develops with age on the surface of good gold and is viewed favorably as an indication of age and quality. The details of in the heads and feathers of the chickens are excellent. These images don’t really do them justice, and I had trouble getting adequate lighting on them to capture their beauty in hand. There is some black pitch on the surface of the menuki with the hen, which could be professionally removed without much trouble at all.
