Yoshikuni’s works are generally in the Bizen tradition and are well regarded. This particular sword looks more like Yamashiro based works however, looking more like a Rai or perhaps Ryokai copy. They are robust blades of solid construction and good heat treating displaying nice noi along the habuchi and profuse koashi in the yakiba. The hada is a very tight itame. The komaru boshi is wide and healthy with a long turn back.

This sword is 26 1/8 inches long and is machi okuri, meaning the notches have been moved up slightly and one nakagoana added. This was likely to accommodate the accompanying gunto koshirae. It is signed Yonezawa ju Yoshikuni Saku, and dated Keio Ni Nen Ju Gatsu (October 1866).

It has also been mounted with a bukezukuri koshirae suitable for practice. It has been in use as a working blade for Iai, but was not used for cutting, so the polish is still very well intact. The fuchi, kashira, and menuki are modern reproductions, and the tsuba is an edo period iron sukashi tsuba. The handle is wrapped in black doeskin ito.

This is a very nice sword package at a reasonable price.
