Noshu Kanehisa

On Sale! $2,200.00

Star stamped Gendaito by Kanehisa. It is nicely forged and beefy like those seen made by smiths such as Emura and Nagamitsu. Fairly even and smallish gunome run the length of the blade, turning into komaru boshi. There is nice depth to the nioi and ko-nie and ji nie are seen throughout, including in the boshi.

Mounted is Model 43/44 style koshirae. Interestingly, most of these are secured with a single screw mekugi and a secondary bamboo, but this one is actually two screws instead of one. There remains only one of the two screws for this however.

The sword has no major flaws, with some minor chips along the edge. Polishing would remedy all of them without trouble and bring up a very pretty running itame hada. The nakago is well finished and has the five point star noting a hand made sword blade accepted for Army purchase. Also present on the nakago is the small stamp for “Na” indicating it was accepted into the Nagoya Army Arsenal. This stamp is seen twice on this sword; once on the ura side of the nakago and once on the mune.

The omote signature reads: Noshu ju Kanehisa

The ura signature reads: Showa Ju Hachi Nen Hachi Gatsu (August, 1943

Nagasa: 27 1/8 inches (68.9 cm)

Motohaba: 1 ¼ inches (3.2 cm)

Kasane: ¼ inch (6.5 mm)

It is difficult to find hand forged Gendaito in lengths greater than 27 inches. The work, health, and length make a very good candidate for a collection, and a good consideration for restoration.
